Featured Nutrient Phosphorous

The mineral, Phosphorous, exists in our body as both elemental as well as the the chemical compound phosphate (PO43). Once phosphorous combines with oxygen, it provides a framework for the building of our our DNA, RNA, as well as used by our cells to form energy through chemical reactions, ATP.

The mineral itself is a co-factor in the assimilation of Riboflavin (B2) and Niacin (B3), aids in the transmission of nerve impulses, helps the kidneys effectively excrete wastes, an electrolyte responsible for proper fluid balance, stimulates hormone production, keeps the brain alert and active, as well as speeding up the body's healing process. In fact, phosphorus is a very valuable mineral in not only is it going to interact with Oxygen to create our cellular existence, it is a necessary part of bone and teeth formation.

Most minerals need to be in the correct ratios, and phosphorus is no different. Phosphorus in optimal ratio with Calcium would be a 2:1. For every 2 parts Calcium, one part Phosphorus. While you do need to have the correct phosphorus ratios it is not acting alone. Infact, calcium absorption is a gentle balancing act involving the hormones, Vitamin D3, Magnesium, the intestine, kidney, liver, and thyroid, parathyroid gland, and of course the recipient the bone.

Anyone eating junkfood, may have too much phosphorus and this, also can cause the body to have impaired calcium absorption. Carbonated water too! Although water sparkling from minerals may not possess the same risk.

Not enough phosphorus may cause the following health problems: bone problems, teeth weakness, fatigue, irregular breathing, stiff joints, numbness, skin sensitivity, stress, irritability, glucose intolerance.

Too much phosphorus may lead to twitching, jerking, and convulsions. However, kidneys are usually easily able to control the blood phosphorus level and excrete the excess.
